Renting a car for your Akumal vacation

We have been going to Akumal once or twice a year for the past 10 years. We have always rented a car to get around as we like to be adventurous but do not have unlimited cash flow. The first couple of times it was scary until we learned how to go with the flow. There have been a few trials like getting scammed at the gas station or paying off the police when they ask for a bribe. That has happened 3 times now and seems to be getting worse every year. But overall, if you'd like to really explore the area, renting a car is the only way to go. Tours are great but also very expensive, especially when you have a family of five.

There are many reputable car rental companies; my favorite is Executive. They are a short walk from the airport and they also have a shuttle but really it is a short walk!

Reserve online and bring confirmation # with you to get internet price. I would also recommend getting the maximum amount of insurance; it nearly doubles the price of the rental but the peace of mind is truly priceless and still less than the cost of tours. You have to have a credit card to rent, and they will run a blank credit card slip which will be returned to you when you return the car. I have one credit card with a low limit ($1000) and that is the one I give them.

I have never had a problem with getting overcharged but I know people who have. When they go over the condition of the car with you, walk around the car and make sure he notes any damages. Also check lights, turn signals, ac etc... and then tip him $5 or so. You will get a copy of this as well as numbers to call if you have any problems. Our car died one trip and they came to Akumal within 3 hours which is pretty fast in Mexico!!

As far as driving from Cancun to Akumal, There are a few things they do a little differently in Mexico:

If you are going slower than traffic and someone wants to pass you, you should maintain your speed but move over to the shoulder so the other car can pass. It seems weird to drive on the shoulder at first, but it will be second nature in no time at all.
ALWAYS watch for pedestrians.

Watch the speed limit signs; they drop from 80 km to 40 km frequently and without notice. We always have the passenger tell the driver when the speed limit changes.

Also, when there is a traffic signal light, before it turns red it will flash yellow a few times as a warning I assume. The only time it is hairy driving from the airport to Akumal is when you approach Playa Del Carmen. There is a lot of traffic and pedestrians but just be slow and careful and you will be fine. Once you pass PDC it is pretty mellow again all the way to Akumal. The pedestrian walkover is just before the turnoff to Akumal. Another odd thing (and this may have changed) is that you go right at the turnoff and then do a quarter turn and stop until traffic is clear on 307 and then cross over as if you were coming straight across the highway from the pueblo.

Once you turn off the highway into Akumal, you can breathe a big sigh of relief! You made it! In less than 15 minutes you will be at your condo or hotel and about to have the time of your life!
An article about day trips from Akumal will follow shortly.

When you return the car, they will do a quick check in and put you in a shuttle and have you back at the airport in no time.
Piece o' Cake!!
