Good eats in Akumal
Here are some great places to eat in and around Akumal.
On the Beach

Topping the list for a truly amazing meal is La Lunita Restaurant. They have tables right on the beach as well as inside. Fantastic food with different specials every night and the best Coconut Shrimp I have ever tasted! A very romantic setting and the staff is incredible as well. We visit yearly and the waiters remember us every time! Highly recommended at least once even if it is a splurge!
A little further down the beach is La Buena Vida Bar and Restaurant. A really fun place to hang out and probably the wildest place you will find in Akumal. They have swings at the bar, hammocks to lounge in, and crow's nests that you can climb up into and enjoy the view. They have buckets on ropes to raise and lower your beverages so you never have to run out of libations! They play a great mix of American and Spanish pop music - the place is always hoppin!
For a classy (albeit expensive) place to dine, try the Lol Ha Restaurant on Akumal Bay. Beautiful place with delicious food and special indulgences - the mayan coffee is worth ordering just for the show! They also have entertainment much of the time - grab the local newspaper when you get to town and see what's going on while you are there! They also have an outdoor restaurant/snack bar on the beach that is fun for people watching. The only downside is that it is quite expensive. Don't order brand name liquor drinks - last trip captain and cokes were over $8 each - a little steep imho!
Off the Beach
Ok, there are a lot of choices here and all of them are delicious!
For Breakfast, Turtle Bay Bakery is our all time favorite. Not only are the baked goods fabulous, but the menu items are so tasty and some of them quite unusual. My favorite is the scrambled eggs with chaya and goat cheese - muy bueno! The kids love the smoothies there too.
Another favorite and a close second is the Loncheria which is the first place on the right when you come into town (directly next door to the Super Chomak). It is a locals hangout and the price is right. We often get lunch to go from there and take it to the beach - always delicious!
The best Shrimp Tacos ever are at Lucys. As a point of reference to find it, if you are standing at the doors to enter the Super Chomak, turn around and look across the street and down the little dirt road directly in front of you. Her place is on the left across from the outdoor market. She also has the best homemade ice cream I have ever tasted! Stop in at the outdoor market while you wait and say hi to Alejandro and Patricia - they have great stuff and Patricia does the hair braiding that is so popular! They are some of the nicest people I have met there. One time we missed our plane and got stranded for a few extra days and they went out of their way to help us get things figured out. Please help support their little booth by buying some of your souvenirs from them!
Imelda's is a great little place really close to the beach near the TSA (which is a good place to exchange your travelers checks for pesos). She serves a yummy breakfast and lunch and one night a week she does an authentic mayan feast (again check the local paper for which night). Imelda is a very nice lady and you will enjoy your meal with her.
A great little Italian restaurant located near Yal-ku lagoon is Que Onda. Delicious homemade pasta dishes and a nice garden atmosphere. A delightful place to spend time with friends and family.
Great seafood is the nightly fare at La Queva Pescador in the center of town. They go out and catch the nightly specials every day! (You can also arrange to have them take you deep sea fishing). An enjoyable place to spend a few hours.
Okay that covers places to eat in Akumal (all within a 5 minute drive or a 15-20 minute walk from anywhere in Akumal).
Now for some good eats worth checking out near Akumal.
In Chemuyil, which is the next town south of Akumal (about a 5 minute drive once you're on highway 307) is Leo's Pizzeria. Incredible food in a little hidden away corner of the world. They have the best Lobster with Garlic - oh my gosh! My mouth is watering just thinking about it! Their pizza is really good too, but our kids didn't care for it much. If you want to have Lobster, either stop by or call the day before you visit to make sure they will have lobster. Every time we go there Leo has come out and talked to us. Really nice people and delicious, delicious food!
About a half hour south of Akumal is the town of Tulum. All the delicious places to eat there will have to go in another article but they have these great little chicken places that you can get half a barbecued chicken, and usually cole slaw, rice and beans for about $6 or $7. Great idea to get some to go to take with you on day trips.
There are so many great restaurants in and around Akumal, I know you will find something that will bring a smile to your face and make you want to go back again!
