Grocery shopping in Akumal
Going grocery shopping during your stay in Akumal can be a little tricky, especially if you're going to be staying for a while. Akumal does have some small grocery stores in town which might work for you, but if you want to stock up for your entire trip you might consider driving to a bigger town to do it. Outside Akumal you'll find bigger stores and better prices on almost everything.
The store I always shop at while I'm in Akumal is The Super Chomak. It's one of the first stores you'll see when you enter Akumal, and it's right on the side of the road making it easily accessible. They are open every day from 7am to 9pm, but they don't take credit cards so have some pesos on you. The Super Chomak is owned by a woman named Charlotte and she is extremely nice.

The Super Chomak is bigger than most other stores in Akumal, but that's because they packed a liquor store, grocery store and tourist store all inside the same place.
Las Palmas is another smaller grocery store right across the street from The Super Chomak. Las Palmas is smaller than The Super Chomak, they they still have everything you need for groceries, and sometimes chaper than The Chomak. It's owned and operated by locals in Akumal.
The Super Chomak and Las Palmas are great if you run out of milk, bread or beer, but if you need to do some real shopping I recommend taking a 30 minute drive north to Playa Del Carmen. The city is a lot bigger than Akumal therefore they have more places to shop, and better prices. My favorite place to shop is at Chedraui, a giant store right on the side of the highway and Juarez street.
Chedraui is as big as most Super-Walmarts in the United States, but with a much bigger selection of everything. For starters, they have 2 full isles of alcohol, everything from beer to wine to vodka. And liquor here costs anywhere from 30% to 50% less than other stores in the same area. If you're going to be drinking a lot on your vacation, it's worth stocking up here.
Chedraui has everything you could want for food too. You'll most likely run into the fresh bakery first. The smell alone will keep you in this section, and the only thing better than the smell of their fresh baked goods is the taste. Fresh cakes, bread, cookies, rolls and more. No need to splurge too much in the baking section though because you can find quality baked goods all over Akumal.
Most of the rest of Chedraui is just like a regular grocery store. They have ton of fresh produce, cereal, frozen goods and everything else you'll need to make some awesome food on your vacation. And of course they have beach chairs, sunscreen, beach umbrellas and everything else to enjoy your days on the beach.
If you're plan is to spend your entire trip inside Akumal, you'll want to stop by Chedraui on your way from Cancun to Akumal because it's right on the way. Get the supplies you'll be using a lot, and then you can restock supplies in the smaller stores like The Super Chomak inside Akumal.
